Making a list, checking it twice

_2009lf2

Like a lot of people, I've totally fallen for list fever. With all this best-of reflecting that's happening everywhere, I'd love to hear people's thoughts on which Australian records were the keepers, the ones that survived the hype, (and people's hopeless memories). Which underrated gems deserved more of the spotlight?

So I'm doing two list-crazy shows on Local Fidelity - 'Best of 2009' on December 20 and 'Best of 2000-nowish' on December 27. It'd be awesome if you could somehow take part.

If you could single out your pick for 2009 favourite Australian record – it could be an album, single, EP, demo – as well as your utmost favourite of the last ten years, that would be amazing. (If you're able to add a line or two on why these releases have defined your year/decade, that'd also be brilliant.) Please everyone don't pick Since I Left You by The Avalanches (even though it is a killer record)!!

Just leave your suggestions, along with your name and suburb in the comments section and I'll announce & play as many as I can on-air on Dec 20 & Dec 27 from 7pm. I'll also blog about the responses here.

To jog your memory, here are a few names (though I'm sure I've missed lots, so please fill in the musical gaps, if you know any).

Can't say I've heard a great deal of Aussie albums from this year, but I really liked Grand Salvo - Soil Creatures. Oh, and I also liked Lisa Mitchell's Wonder but it's probably not very cool to like an ex-aussie idol, is it.

Top 10 Aussie albums of the decade:

1. Eddy Current Suppression Ring - Primary Colours
2. Darren Hanlon - Hello Stranger
3. The Drones - Galah Mill
4. Dirty Three - Whatever You Love, You Are
5. Art Of Fighting - Second Storey
6. Grand Salvo - The Temporal Wheel
7. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - And No More Shall We Part
8. Augie March - Sunset Studies
9. You Am I - Dress Me Slowly
10. Decoder Ring - Somersault Soundtrack

Loved Fergus Brown's 'Burgers Frown' album. It seemed whimsical but had an undercurrent laden with some heavier stuff, a bit like this year, which seemed trivial but actually had a hell of a lot going on.

Also have a soft spot for the Faux Pas remix of Paul Dempsey's 'Ramona was a waitress', which embodied the trend of Aussie musos remixing other Aussie musos' stuff. All very fraternal.

Album of the decade: 'Cities' by The Cat Empire Project. Largely overlooked by commercial radio as too challenging (and overlooked by community radio because it came from a band that has had commercial success) it embraced musicality with cheeky lyrics, had its feet on Australian shores with ears to world music and was just too far ahead of its time to attain the success it deserved.

single: Sunny in Splodges - kyu

album: Jonathan Boulet (self titled)

both amazing, no wonder the pair teamed up for the Jonathan Boulet launch

* The Diamond Sea - Slow Signal
* Bare Arms - e.p.
* Arrows - Modern Art & Politics
* Lungs - Solitary, Poor, Nasty, Brutish, Short
* Lights Out - Lights Out
* Animal Shapes

That's my faves from this year. My biggest problem is finding great music that came out a few years ago, so it can't make the list
